Channel Foundation shares key insights from a report, We Need to Know the Humanitarian Sector Stands With Us, co-written by grantee partners Global Fund for Women, MADRE, and Purposeful, researched by the Institute for Journalism and Social Change (IJSC). The report, published June 13, 2024, reveals the critical contributions of young women and girls in crisis response, despite receiving minimal funding.
Key findings include:
- Women’s rights organizations received just 0.34% of global aid in 2022.
- Only 2% of humanitarian assistance focused on gender equality.
- Girls were mentioned in only 85 out of 24,000 project titles in 2022.
The report highlights case studies from Afghanistan, Sudan, and Ukraine, where young women are leading critical efforts, including operating health clinics, providing gender-based violence services, and sheltering displaced women, often with little financial support.
The report calls for a major shift in humanitarian aid, advocating for increased funding for young women, better transparency, and collaboration with feminist funds.
