Mission:
Our mission is to resource the resilience of women and non-binary human rights defenders by strengthening and sustaining webs of security and care. Our strategies are multi-faceted and linked to a transformative agenda of achieving social justice, building a solidarity economy and re-imagining cultures, including the culture of giving in Asia and the Pacific.
Impact:
In November 2025, Urgent Action Fund Asia & Pacific (UAF A&P) released a report, “Rumah Kita: The Story of Our Becoming”, sharing the story of its origins as a fund. UAF A&P is a proud member of the UAF Sister Funds which make grants all around the world. In particular, UAF A&P brings learning about how to resource resilient movements, using an emergent learning framework to quickly and thoughtfully track, assess and adapt their programs. UAF A&P is also paving the way by piloting the use of new digital safety tools.
Channel Grants:
2021-24: Channel made a three year general operating grant to Urgent Action Fund Asia & Pacific (UAF-AP) to support their work providing rapid response grants and longer-term resilience building activities to activists, defenders and their movements.
2019: Channel made a two-year grant to support Urgent Action Fund Asia & Pacific (UAF-AP) via the Urgent Action Fund (UAF) fiscal sponsorship. Funds were used to support UAF-AP’s rapid response grants in the Asia-Pacific region. UAF-AP continued to develop their Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning System (MEAL) and furthered their outreach and network building.
UAF-AP rapid response grants provide critical timely support to women and non-binary defenders at risk via Security and Wellbeing, Resourcing Resilience, and Webs of Safety and Care grants.
2017: Channel made a two-year grant to support the launch and set-up of the newly independent Urgent Action Fund Asia & Pacific (UAF-AP), the newest sister fund of the Urgent Action Fund Consortium, and the first rapid response mechanism for women human rights defenders (WHRDs) headquartered within the Asia Pacific region.
UAF-AP was formally launched on October 24, 2017 in Colombo, Sri Lanka and was set up to disburse rapid response grants to women and non-binary (lesbian, trans) human rights defenders for urgent threats or opportunities particularly in conflict and post-conflict affected countries. This was done through a multi-pronged strategy of ‘resourcing resilience,’ which is integrally linked to the agenda of building a ‘solidarity economy’ and requires a reimagining of cultures.
UAF-AP is strengthening a culture of philanthropy in the region via a new Women of Courage Asia Pacific (WoC-AP) network including donors and social entrepreneurs. By re-imagining cultures, UAF-AP is opening meaningful spaces of safety and creativity, and producing new language and references that could generate support, pride and care from the engaged public.
UAF-AP is also establishing a Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning system that they hope will enable them to improve their rapid response grant making and update their plans, as needed.
