Mission:
Mama Cash was the first international women’s fund in the world. Today, they fund and support women’s rights initiatives around the globe that challenge the root causes of injustice.
Impact:
Mama Cash has had tremendous impact supporting feminist activism around the world. Indeed, since 1983, Mama Cash has awarded €92,489,796 to groups led by women, girls, and trans and intersex people worldwide.
But Mama Cash has also had a large impact on the field of feminist funding. It has helped to support the birth and launch of numerous regional and national women's funds all around the world.
Mama Cash also has a long-standing history of seeking out, co-creating, facilitating and/or leading feminist alliances and partnerships including the Count Me In Consortium, The Global Alliance for Green and Gender Action (GAGGA), and hosted the Red Umbrella Fund.
Channel Grant:
2017: Channel made a grant to support Mama Cash’s Leading from the South (LFSF) Fund Accompaniment Initiative. The LFSF was launched in January 2017 by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a 40 million Euro investment over four years and represents the first bilateral partnership with a group of women’s funds each based in the Global South. The LFSF managing partners are: African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), the International Women’s Indigenous Fund (AYNI-FIMI), Fondo de Mujeres del Sur (FMS)and Women’s Fund Asia. Not only does LFSF represent a significant amount of new money for women’s rights movements to be managed by women-led organizations; it is also significant that the Dutch Ministry chose to partner with women’s funds as sole fund managers; and to send funding directly to the Global South instead of through North-based organizations.
To learn more about LFSF, view AWDF’s video about the initiative.
With the LFSF Accompaniment Initiative, Mama Cash and Prospera – International Network of Women’s Funds provides accompaniment to the four LFSF managing funds in the form of capacity support and helps build on the opportunity and the lessons learned to benefit the women’s funds community and women’s funding movement as a whole.
