The Substratum Initiative

Mission:
The Substratum Initiative is a movement-rooted infrastructure initiative working to strengthen the long-term resilience of youth-led movements. Rather than funding individual projects, Substratum focuses on the systems beneath the work, supporting shared financial, operational, and governance infrastructure, alongside a pooled Resilience Reserve (in future phases) designed to help movements withstand shocks and sustain leadership over time.
Grounded in what youth-led movements are naming as urgent. burnout, funding cliffs, and lack of core systems, Substratum operates as a collaborative experimentation space. It works with a small cohort of youth-movement partners to co-create and test shared infrastructure models that can be adapted across the ecosystem.
By investing in stabilisation as a form of impact, Substratum aims to shift how philanthropy understands and resources movement durability in the context of increasing restrictions on civic space.
Channel Grant:
2025-27: Channel made a grant to the Substratum Initiative to support its launch and begin carrying out its mission to strengthen the roots of democracy, climate, and gender-justice ecosystems by co-creating durable infrastructure—financial reserves, shared systems, and governance supports—that help movements endure and adapt.
