About:
Graduate Program: Course in Agroecology, Integrated Pest Management & Sustainable Agriculture, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, USA
Background & Goals: Golam Faruq hoped to train farmers to improve yields and methods of rice and wheat production using non-chemical and ecological approaches to pest management.
Post-degree Projects: After completion of his degree, Dr. Faruq became Senior Scientific Officer at the Wheat Research Centre, part of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, and worked with marginalized farmers to ensure enough wheat seed in spring wheat growing season. In 2007, Dr. Faruq assisted in establishing a grain quality laboratory at the Centre. The laboratory has enabled the University to develop a high-protein wheat variety, benefiting those suffering from malnutrition. Additionally, Dr. Faruq has been involved in cross breeding different plant strains resulting in more sustainable cropping patterns.
